Assistant Instructor
Location: Chicago
Type: Independent Contractor | Part-Time
The Mahjong Society is seeking Assistant Instructors to support our growing calendar of lessons and events across Chicago. This role is ideal for someone who knows American Mahjong, enjoys working with people, and wants to help create a welcoming, well-run experience for every table.
About the Role
Assistant Instructors work alongside a Lead Instructor to ensure each lesson runs smoothly. While the Lead teaches the room, you’ll guide one table of students — demonstrating the deal, walking players through the Charleston, answering questions in real time, and helping beginners evaluate hands and pivot as the game unfolds.
This is an active, hands-on role. You do not need to be an expert player, but you must be confident in the fundamentals of American Mahjong and comfortable explaining concepts clearly and patiently to new players.
Lessons are primarily held in the evenings and on weekends and typically run 2.5–3 hours
Responsibilities
Support the Lead Instructor during lessons and events
Guide one table of players through gameplay and strategy
Reinforce foundational mechanics and lesson pacing
Answer questions and help students feel confident at the table
Assist with event setup and teardown
Arrive on time and prepared
Independent contractor position
Assistants sign up for lessons that work for their schedule
Minimum commitment of 3 lessons per month preferred
Paid training provided
Compensation
Assistant Instructors start at $30 per hour. Compensation reflects the 2.5–3 hour event window and includes paid training prior to assisting your first lesson.
Growth Opportunities
Assistant Instructors may choose to train toward becoming a Lead Instructor over time, but this is not required. We value team members who enjoy the Assistant role and want to continue supporting lessons at the table level.
If you love the game and want to help bring mahjong to more tables across Chicago, we’d love to hear from you.
