Lead Instructor
Location: Chicago
Type: Independent Contractor | Part-Time
The Mahjong Society is seeking Lead Instructors to independently teach small-group American Mahjong lessons across Chicago. This role is ideal for someone who knows the game thoroughly, enjoys teaching, and feels comfortable leading a room with clarity and confidence.
About the Role
Lead Instructors are responsible for guiding lessons of 4–8 players from start to finish. You will teach the structure and flow of American Mahjong, explain strategy and mechanics in approachable ways, and manage the pacing of the lesson so students feel both supported and challenged.
This role requires more than knowing how to play — it requires the ability to translate complex concepts into language beginners can understand. Patience, strong communication skills, and comfort speaking in front of a group are essential.
Most lessons take place in the evenings and on weekends, with occasional daytime opportunities based on availability. Lessons typically run 2.5–3 hours.
Responsibilities
Lead small-group lessons (4–8 players) independently
Teach gameplay mechanics, strategy, and pacing clearly and confidently
Manage the overall flow and timing of the lesson
Communicate directly with clients prior to the lesson
Arrive prepared with all required teaching materials (provided by TMS)
Represent The Mahjong Society professionally at all events
Independent contractor position
Primarily evenings and weekends (daytime availability is a plus)
Minimum commitment of 4–6 lessons per month preferred
Compensation
Lead Instructors start at $45 per hour. Compensation reflects the full 2.5–3 hour event window and includes paid training prior to leading your first independent lesson.
Growth Opportunities
Lead Instructors may choose to take on larger lessons and events over time and work with Assistant Instructors as the business grows, but this is not required. We value instructors who are committed to delivering consistent, high-quality lessons at any scale.
If you know American Mahjong well, enjoy teaching, and want to play a central role in growing the game across Chicago, we’d love to hear from you.
